According to its spatial position within the limits of Lika and Senj
County, the Municipality of Perušić occupies a part of its central area,
thereby adjoining the Town of Senj in its western part, while the
northern edge represents a border towards the City of Otočac and the
Municipality of Plitvice Lakes. By one's remaining south-eastern and
southern marginal parts, the Municipality of Perušić borders with the
Town of Gospić that is the centre of the County.
On the basis of
this division, the settlement of
Perušić became the municipal centre of
the Municipality bearing the same name, in whose composition enter the
following 20 settlements: Bukovac Perušićki, Donji (Lower) Kosinj
(Rudinka, Vukelići), Gornji (Upper) Kosinj, Kaluđerovac, Klenovac,
Konjsko Brdo (Horse Hill), Kosa Janjačka (Janjačka Slant), Kosinjski
Bakovac, Kvarte, Krš (Karst), Lipovo Polje (Lime Field), Malo polje
(Small Field), Mezinovac, Perušić, Prvan Village, Studenci (Wells), S.
Marko (St. Mark) and Kaniža.
The most important traffic routes,
thanks to which the traffic connections of Perušić are good, are the
state road D-50 between Otočac and Gospić, motorway Zagreb-Split
(Perušić has an exit from the motorway), and the magisterial railway MP
11.
The area of the Municipality of Perušić is about 382,94 km2.
The
urban settlement of Perušić, in respect to the area of the
Municipality, is situated in the south-eastern part of the municipality
in an area of a vale - field between the railway to the east, Gradine
(the ruins of the old town of Perušić on the location of today's Tower)
and the hill of Klis westward, with the highest population density
alongside the main communication line (Otočac-Gospić).
The
settlement of Perušić, that is its wider space, is situated inside the
spatial field on an altitude from 575 to 600 m above sea level.
Decline
in population represents a characteristic trend:
* According
to the population census from 1991, the Municipality of Perušić had
5.648 inhabitants, while in 2001 the number went down to 3515
inhabitants.
Around 120 pupils attend the Perušić Elementary
School today, and it used to consist of 4 district schools and one
central school.
